Getting started
Use a mobile application while driving a vehicle to capture data for CityLens. To get started:
-
Contact your organization to get required credentials, links, and permissions.
-
Review requirements for mobile devices to be used for recording.
-
Install the CityLens mobile application and log in.
-
When asked, grant the application access to the following:
- Camera: to take photos and record videos.
- Precise data on device geolocation and background geolocation tracking: to track the route and to bind photos and videos to geocoordinates.
-
(Recommended) Download an offline map of the territory where you plan to drive so that you do not depend on network quality:
- Go to the Settings tab and select the Maps section.
- Select and download the required territories of cities or regions.
-
In your mobile device settings, enable Wi-Fi (you do not need to connect to any network) and keep it turned on during the recording session. This improves the accuracy of location data and the subsequent display of objects and tracks on the map.
-
(Android devices only) If your device may not have enough storage to record all detour tracks, prepare an external storage device (a flash drive) and a cable to connect it. During recording, you will be able to export tracks to the external storage.
-
Make sure that your device is fully charged.
Using the power saving mode is not recommended.
-
Safely mount the device in the car: see the camera and mounting requirements.
-
Start recording while following the recording conditions requirements.
The mobile application interface contains the following tabs:

- Statistics tab where you can see daily information on the total traveled distance and the number of uploaded and processed images. The numbers are updated when some images are captured and uploaded.
- CityLens tab where you can start recording data in one of the modes or upload recorded tracks. See the Recording data instruction.
- Settings tab where you can configure track recording and see details of the application and your account.
